About the Virus

COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus first identified in Wuhan City, China in January 2020 and causes respiratory infection .  The incubation period of COVID-19 is between 2 and 14 days and a new variant of the Infection is causing concern.   In 2021 a variant called Delta became dominant with a further variant known as Omicron becoming dominant in December 2021.

The following symptoms may develop in the 14 days after exposure to someone with the virus:

  • fever,

  • loss of smell or taste

  • dry cough

  • after a week, leads to shortness of breath.

New variant symptoms may also include  runny nose,  headache,  fatigue (mild or severe),  sneezing and/or sore throat.

However these symptoms do not necessarily mean you have the illness. The symptoms are similar to other viruses that are much more common, such as colds and flu.

The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus and by following NHS advice as below:

  • Wear a mask

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often

  • Use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available.

  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze.

  • Put used tissues in the bin straight away

  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces

  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

  • Get a test and to self isolate.

If you are worried about symptoms, please call NHS 111. Do not go directly to your GP or other healthcare environment.
